How to Sew a Decorative Pillow

Decorative pillows can be expensive in stores and purchasing several pillows to arrange on your bed or sofa can add up to quite a bit of money. Even basic pillows can go for as much as $20 or $30 dollars each in some department stores. Instead of shelling out cash for simple decorative pillows, you can learn to make your own and use up scrap fabric or take advantage of discounted home decor fabric remnants at your local fabric store.

Step One
Cut two squares from your chosen fabric approximately one inch larger than you would like the finished decorative pillow to be.

Step Two
Place the two squares of fabric right sides together and fold them in half twice. Now you have a square that is 1/4 the size of the original fabric squares.

Step Three
Trim the square edge of the unfolded edges slightly to give it a rounded appearance. This will prevent your finished decorative pillow from having extremely pointed, empty looking corners which is usually considered unattractive.

Step Four
Unfold the fabric squares and arrange them with the right sides together again.

Step Five
Pin the squares together so that the edges are all even.

Step Six
Sew a straight stitch along three sides of the fabric squares approximately 1/2 inch from the outer edge of the squares.

Step Seven
Stitch the fourth side closed at both ends but leave a gap in the middle large enough to insert your hand into the decorative pillow.

Step Eight
Turn the decorative pillow inside out and fill it with fiberfill or a pillow form of the appropriate size.

Step Nine
Sew the opening on the decorative pillow closed by hand.
